About this role
Graduate Applications Engineer
Peterborough | Office-based | Salary £29-33k dependent on experience
Calling curious graduates. Are you…
the person who wants to understand how something works, not just accept that it does
good with numbers, words and questions – particularly the useful sort
looking for a first proper career opportunity where you can learn from experienced people and become genuinely valuable
And are you more than ready…
to work on real engineering problems that are rarely the same twice
to join a friendly small business where people know your name, notice your progress and support you to do well
for structured training, increasing responsibility and a career built around practical problem-solving
You do not need to arrive knowing everything about pumps; all we ask is that you’re keen and willing to learn.
Hydromarque supplies specialist pumping solutions for the water and wastewater industries and holds the UK licence for selected product lines that no other UK supplier can offer. The business is looking for someone with the aptitude and attitude to learn how to turn a customer’s problem into the right technical solution.
The role
This is a development role where you’ll learn the applications-engineering process from experienced colleagues, working with the Hydromarque team in Peterborough.
Your development will include learning how to:
understand what a customer is really trying to achieve;
ask clear questions and gather the technical detail needed to assess an application;
select suitable pumps, systems and associated equipment;
prepare quotations, tenders and professional customer emails;
use Hydromarque’s product information and internal systems accurately;
support technical enquiries by phone and email; and
take increasing ownership of applications and customer relationships as your knowledge grows.
For roughly your first three months, the focus will be induction, observation and learning rather than transactional customer work. At around six months, you should be starting to handle straightforward enquiries with support. Becoming fully confident takes time – typically two to three years – because this is a genuine technical career, not a six-week crash course and a new email signature.
The role is primarily office-based. Once you have suitable training and confidence, there may also be opportunities to accompany colleagues on customer site visits.
About you
How many of this list can you tick off
A degree or graduate-level capability, with a solid foundation in Maths and English;
A practical, analytical approach to problem-solving;
An inquisitive mind and the confidence to ask questions when you do not yet know the answer;
Clear spoken communication and professional written English;
Good Excel skills and general computer literacy;
Mechanical aptitude or a genuine interest in how equipment and systems work; and
A proactive, adaptable and team-focused attitude.
An engineering, mechanical, mathematics, physics or related background may be helpful, as would any understanding of hydraulics, but Hydromarque is more interested in how you think and learn than in finding somebody with a perfectly labelled degree certificate.
As a person, you’ll be approachable, willing to help and comfortable becoming part of a close-knit team. You’ll care about getting the details right for customers and be motivated by making a useful contribution to specific industries such as water and food and beverages as well as general industry.
What it’s like to work here
Hydromarque is a small, agile business where the Directors sit with the team, hierarchy is kept to a minimum and everyone gets involved. People support one another, celebrate together and understand that work is important without pretending it is the only important thing in life.
You’ll have the freedom to contribute ideas and, as your capability develops, real autonomy in your role. Hydromarque is also part of the WTR Group, so you gain the close support of a small business alongside the stability, supplier network and longer-term possibilities of a larger international group.
What’s on offer
A salary that reflects your starting point;
25 days’ annual leave plus Bank Holidays;
Employer pension contribution of 5% when you contribute 5%;
Death in Service Benefit (3x salary)
Relocation assistance may be available for the right candidate;
A Company-performance bonus scheme;
Access to the WTR Group employee share scheme;
Patient, hands-on training and mentoring from experienced colleagues; and
A structured opportunity to grow into an Applications Engineer and, in time, take on senior applications responsibility.
