A ghost job is a role that is advertised but not actively being filled. The company is either collecting CVs speculatively, the role has already been filled internally, the hiring has been paused, or the listing was never taken down after the position closed.
Research suggests around 24% of job listings in the UK fall into this category at any given time. Applying for ghost jobs wastes time that could go towards real opportunities.
What ghost jobs look like
Ghost jobs share common characteristics. They tend to:
- Have been posted for more than 30 days without the listing being updated or removed
- Use generic language with no specific team, manager, or project mentioned
- List no salary, no application deadline, and no clear hiring timeline
- Come from companies that have recently announced hiring freezes or redundancies
- Appear on multiple job boards with different posting dates, suggesting the listing is being re-posted automatically
How to check if a role is real before applying
Before investing time in an application, do a quick check:
Check the company's careers page directly. If the role does not appear on the company's own website, it has likely already been filled or removed. Third-party boards often keep listings live long after the original has closed.
Check LinkedIn for the hiring team. If the company has grown significantly in the role's department recently (lots of new hires in the last 30 days), they are probably actively recruiting. If headcount has been flat or shrinking, be more cautious.
Look at the company's recent news. A company that announced a hiring freeze in March is unlikely to be actively filling graduate roles in April, regardless of what their careers page says.
Check how long the listing has been live. Roles posted more than four weeks ago and still active on every job board are suspect. Fresh listings, posted within the last 48 hours, are far more likely to be genuine.
Why applying early protects you from ghost jobs
Ghost jobs accumulate over time. A listing that was genuine when first posted can become a ghost listing if hiring is paused mid-process. The earlier you apply after a role goes live, the more likely it is that the role is still active and the hiring team is still engaged.
This is one of the strongest arguments for prioritising new listings over comprehensive search. A role posted in the last 24 hours is almost always real. A role posted 45 days ago is not.
What to do if you suspect a role is a ghost
Do not apply speculatively hoping for the best. The time spent on a ghost application (CV tailoring, cover letter, form completion) is time that could go towards a live role where you actually have a chance.
Instead, either move on entirely, or if the company is a genuine target, reach out directly to a recruiter or hiring manager on LinkedIn to ask whether the role is still active. A direct message asking a clear question ("Is the graduate analyst role still open for applications?") takes 30 seconds and gets you a definitive answer.
